Heteen Development Foundation participated in the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16), hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Riyadh on Monday, December 2, 2024. The Foundation was represented at this important event by Dr. Jamal Al-Faqih, Director of the Foundation, who contributed to the discussions and activities related to combating desertification and reclaiming degraded lands.
This participation comes within the framework of Heteen Development Foundation’s commitment to contributing to global efforts to protect the environment and combat climate change, especially in light of the classification of the conference by the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as a “decisive moment” to protect and reclaim lands and respond to increasing drought. The conference highlighted previous commitments, such as the pledge to reclaim one billion hectares of degraded lands by 2030.
Dr. Jamal Al-Faqih participated in discussions that addressed the main challenges facing efforts to combat desertification, such as forest loss and soil degradation, and their negative impacts on biodiversity and the ability to adapt to climate change, in addition to the importance of adopting a proactive approach to confronting drought. The participation of the Heteen Development Foundation in this important international conference comes as a step to enhance its role in contributing to sustainable solutions to combat desertification and protect the environment.
